1.0 Definition 

1.1 PSW – Primary School Wear 

1.2 State Schools’ Relief – a non-profit organisation that assists family who are experiencing financial difficulties with school uniform. Parents can contact the principal of student wellbeing coordinator. 

2. Purpose

2.1 To build a strong sense of belonging to the Coatesville PS community. 

2.2 To demonstrate pride in representing our school at all times. 

2.3 To recognise that issues of equality, health & safety, inclusivity and expense are factors that contribute to the development of the Student Uniform Policy at Coatesville PS. 

2.4 This policy applies to all students who attend Coatesville PS. 

3. Guidelines

3.1 The student uniform will:- 3.1.1 reflect Coatesville Primary School’s whole school Values; 

3.1.2 promote equality amongst all students; 

3.1.3 build and maintain a sense of pride in our school; 

3.1.4 provide choice to foster inclusivity; 

3.1.5 allow for students to safely engage in the many, varied school activities; 

3.1.6 cater for the financial constraints of families. 

3.2 The school uniform supplier will provide durable clothing that is cost effective and practical for our school environment. 

3.3 Primary School Wear (PSW) will be the school’s preferred supplier of all uniform items that bear the school logo. 

3.4 The school uniform supplier will be reviewed on a three yearly basis. 

4. Implementation

4.1 The student uniform applies from Prep to Grade 6 and must be worn at all times during school hours, while travelling to and from school, and on school excursions. 

4.2 One set of small silver or gold stud earrings and sleepers worn in the ears and watches are the only acceptable jewellery. 

4.3 Extreme hair colours and styles and the wearing of cosmetics are ONLY permitted on fun or special days as specified. 

4.4 The only acceptable headwear is the official school Sun Smart hats consistent with our sun smart policy. These hats must be worn outside from the beginning of September 1 until the end of April. Hats are not to be worn inside. 

4.5 Shoes, runners, closed-toe sandals must be worn at all times with socks. Thongs are not permitted. 

4.6 All uniform items must be clearly labelled with a full name eg. Mary Smith. Misplaced unnamed items of clothing will be given to the school’s second hand uniform shop. 

4.7 The school’s second hand uniform shop operates at the school on a parent volunteer basis. See Parent Information Booklet for details. 

4.8 School Council requires the principal, in consultation with the staff, to be responsible for implementation of the Student Uniform Policy. 

4.9 Arrangements can be made to supply uniforms via State Schools’ Relief for families experiencing economic hardship. Contact the Principal. 

4.10 Parents seeking exemptions to the Student Uniform Policy due to religious beliefs, ethnic or cultural background, student disability or health condition should apply in writing to the principal. 

4.11 The Coatesville Primary School uniform items can be purchased at the PSW retail store (15 Mills St, Cheltenham) or at PSW online - www.psw.com.au 

4.12 School uniform may be worn in a range of combinations, unless otherwise specified by staff: 

SUMMER UNIFORM (Term 1 & Term 4)

Summer Dress 

• blue/white gingham (to be phased out by the end of 2018) 

• tartan (available at PSW in 2017) 

Pants 

• gabardine, zip pocket shorts - navy 

• elastic waist pants –yoke back 

• track pants (no stripes or patterns) - navy 

• culottes - navy 

• skort - navy 

Tops 

• polo shirt - pale blue (school logo) (to be phased out by the end of 2018) 

• polo shirt - pale blue with maroon side panels, short & long sleeved (school logo) (from 2017) 

• maroon windcheater (school logo) 

• maroon bomber jacket (school logo) 

• maroon fleece vest 

 

Year 6 students (only) design and wear a commemorative jumper. 

Hats

• Prep to Grade 4 - broad-brimmed maroon school hat (school logo) 

• Grade 5 & Grade 6 - navy bucket school hat (school logo) 

Shoes 

• school shoes - black 

• sandals - white or black with closed toe 

• runners

Socks 

• white, navy or black 

• tights – navy 

• leggings – full length only - navy

WINTER UNIFORM (Term 2 & Term 3) 

Winter Dress 

• tartan pinafore 

Pants

• own choice in school colours (navy, maroon) 

Scarf/Snood 

• Own choice navy, white, maroon, tartan

4.13 Teachers will:

4.13.1 Promote and monitor the wearing of school uniform. 

4.13.2 Withdraw students from school activities where their attire may present a health and safety risk eg. inappropriate footwear or clothing not meeting the Sun Smart objectives. 

4.13.3 Contact parents via email regarding a student not wearing uniform (as per this Student Uniform policy). 

4.13.4 Ensure students are prepared for extreme weather conditions prior to excursions/camps by advising parents in writing about necessary clothing and other items required for the excursion or camp. 

4.14 Parents will:

4.14.1 Provide the approved items (see 4.13) for their children to wear at school. 

4.14.2 Clearly name all clothing worn to school. 

4.14.3 Maintain school uniform items in a neat and clean condition. 

4.14.4 Provide a written request to the principal for any alteration, modification or addition relating to their child’s wearing of uniform. 

4.15 Students will:

4.15.1 Wear uniform in a respectful manner whilst at school and travelling to and from school. 

4.15.2 Be responsible and care for all of their own clothing items whilst at school. 

4.15.3 Not wear any jewellery or any other fashion items. 

4.16 School will:

4.16.1 Clearly communicate that the wearing of school uniform at Coatesville PS is compulsory for all students. Any request for an exemption regarding a uniform item must be made in writing to the principal. Exemption requests may only be due to religious beliefs, ethnic or cultural background, student disability or health condition. 

4.16.2 Provide an online and retail outlet via contract with PSW. 

4.16.3 Facilitate the sale of used or donated uniform items through the school’s second hand uniform shop. 

4.16.4 Regularly review the approved uniform supplier to ensure quality and cost effectiveness is maintained. 

4.16.5 Consider any amendments to approved items (see 4.12) through School Council. 

4.16.6 Ensure that named items are returned to students and unnamed items are sent to the school and/or school’s second hand uniform shop. 

5. Evaluation:

5.1 This policy will be reviewed every three years, or as required, as part of the school’s review cycle or as required.
